It's always a pleasant surprise to discover a Confront release: singular package (often limited to essentials), challenging works as content, interest in artists involved in innovation and experimentation, sometimes related each other by parallel projects.
The newest one represents the eighth episode in the Collectors Series and consists of a collaboration between Lee Patterson (sound artist devoted to manage almost inaudible sounds) and Graham Halliwell (unordinary saxophonist and free improvisor since quite a long time).
"Terrain" contains four untitled tracks recorded in North Norfolk three years ago.
Of these, the first immediately wraps the listener, surrounding him by a hypnotic aura. It starts quietly and moves forward through stratified layers based on field recordings and amplified, processed saxophone.
The second piece has a slightly different structure: pervasive textures designed by Graham on a prepared surface of disturbing interferences.
The third segment highlights a drone attitude, with changes in density and a larger manipulation of raw sounds, deeply dilated.
The final track resumes the second: prevalence of saxophone feedback, new disturbances, loudly emitted, which turn at the end into a short, intense hiss.
Halliwell and Patterson gave us captivating recordings, originated by an intelligent assemblage of instruments and other sources utilized, confirming the role of protagonists in sound exploration and the reason of a general, enthusiastic appreciation for their work.
