William Basinski + Richard Chartier - Untitled 1 - 3

"Richard and I became friends after meeting at Tonic in NY when he and Taylor Deupree did a show with Carsten Nicolai. He contacted me about a possible collaboration and sent me a track which I thought was very rich and harmonically similar to something I had recently been working on, a very swampy, dark piece I was calling "The Garden of Brokenness" after a very beautiful new installation by James Elaine.
I popped it into pro tools with my piece and something really special was happening, so I spent a few weeks weeding my track, trying different things...eventually I stripped it way down and we were both quite happy with the result.
Richard came up to NY and we fine tuned it a bit together and it was done. Since the piece had changed quite a bit we decided not to use that title for this piece. He then sent me another one and again, it just worked with something else I had been working on...the second track came together very quickly, and there you have it! I love Richard's work...very elegant, like the man!".
(William Basinski)

Two masters of microsound together again for reissuing an appreciated collaborative work released in 2004 on Spekk label, now resumed, expanded with two new tracks and remastered by Taylor Deupree.
William and Richard decided to add “Untitled 3” and its “Reprise” to the two original pieces, keeping the early profile that marked this project.
A matter of pure minimalism here, a sound softly made that gracefully expands itself.
If you have not yet listened to “Untitled” (Spekk, 2004) it's time to do it now, if you loved it you’ll view this update as a well-conceived integration, once again able to transmit to you its meditative atmosphere.

    Sound Art: Seth Nehil

Seth Nehil is an American artist (born in 1973) involved in various projects ranging from sound/visual arts to compositions for theatre and dance, from multimedia performances to writing.
Furthermore, he established a stable collaboration with other significant sound researchers (John Grzinich, Olivia Block, Michael Northam).
Seth is also co-editor and designer for FO A RM, a magazine of arts and culture.
He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
It's not so easy to describe the music of Seth Nehil: perhaps it looks like a compound of several substances, being obtained by capturing natural and urban sounds, playing instruments, as well as by electronic treatments, textured objects and so on...
What follows is an almost complete list of his solo/collaborative (sound)works.
As for other activities, visit his own website.

    Matthieu Saladin - 4'33"/0'00"

4’33’’ is a John Cage’s notorious composition, conceived in 1952 and first played by David Tudor on piano in the same year.
It was released on vinyl in 1974 by Cramps Records.
“Four, thirty-three” consists of four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence…
During this time the performer plays nothing.
The purpose is let the listeners hear the sounds of environments where the piece is performed.
Cage said: "There is no such thing as silence. Something is always happening that makes a sound."
Matthieu Saladin now elaborates on this piece and, amplifying it at the maximum, unveils an amazing cascade of noise, kept hidden so far, unimaginable to think it could be taken out from such a composition.
Silence doesn’t exist, really. Play it loud, as usual.

    VV.AA. - Signal To Noise Vol. 4 / VV.AA. - Signal To Noise Vol. 5

Two releases which expand the "Signal to noise" series, started in 2006 on Günter Müller's label (For 4 Ears), each with the presence of a guest whose contribution orientates the single project.
Both works were recorded in Japan in 2006 and, based on different approaches, move on separate levels of experimentation.

"Volume four" offers a studio session recorded at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media whose performers were Jason Kahn (analog synthesizer, percussion), Tomas Korber (guitar, electronics), Norbert Möslang (cracked everyday_electronics), Günter Müller (ipod, percussion, electronics) and Christian Weber (contrabass). Katsura Yamauchi added himself to the quintet in this circumstance, with a significant incidence of his saxophone into both pieces.
The work consists of two long tracks defined by a free improvisation spirit, the first absolutely quiet, the second having an explicit noise-attitude.

Recorded at the Buru Studios in Kyoto by three members of the "Signal" group (Kahn, Möslang and Müller), this time with Akifumi Nakajima (Aube) as guest, the fifth episode contains four pieces composed by a large use of electronics and noise treatments, in a detectable Aube-style.
