Bear, Bertucci Duo - Controlled Burn

Released in May 2012 via Peira on a very limited run of one hundred CDs, the latest offering from Chicago based experimental Jazz outfit Ed Bear and Lea Bertucci, who also work under the name Twistycat, is called “Controlled Burn”. It is a master class in improvisational techniques and free form sounds.

About the duo

The duo base their act round the coupling of electro-acoustic woodwind instruments of bass clarinet and baritone saxophone and use a blend of feedback techniques to produce a sound that is both intensely passionate and yearning, yet remaining strangely discordant.

They seek to try and stop the distance between audience and performer and break down the barriers that have been firmly put up in the past, which haven’t always allowed a strong connection between the two within this particular form of music.

On this latest album, they further their ideas of creating a harmony between sight and sound, with a collection of instrumentals that provoke thought and feeling, conjuring up many emotions and inspiring the listener to let their imagination flow as they hear what Bear and Bertucci call “post-industrial dissonance”.

The album

The tracks on the album create an innate sense of space and time, yet hold an immense energy within them that charges thoughts and feelings. The second track, “Scelsi Girls” is a prime example of this. It’s an experiment in long, droning notes with peaks and troughs.
The saxophone and clarinet feel like they are playing a game of cat and mouse in a way, chasing each other and trying to compete for supremacy over the almost four minute in length piece. The end of the track, though quite abrupt, brings a lulling sense of stillness and calm as if the battle between the two instruments has been fought and won.

At just over nine minutes, “Tooth” is the longest track on the album. It has a jarring quality to it, a sense of unease. Its wisps, crackles and disjointed feeling promote a feeling of anxiety within the listener, almost a sort of “who might be behind the door” horror movie aura that is very compelling.

The shortest track on the album is the sublime “Fanfare”, which in many ways is the most coherently structured piece of the entire work. Listening to it brings a memory of Michael Nyman and his use of woodwind instrumentation in his film score for “The Draughtsman’s Contract”. It has a beautifully rolling structure to it, a repetitive melody which makes it easy to recognise and remember. In some ways, it felt as if it was almost too short and that it could have carried on and developed for a much longer time frame without becoming too much.

“Rare Earths” is a quiet, slow burner, once it swings into action it pulls the listener in with an intense, swirling maelstrom of noise. At first, it feels like it might ever start. It jolts the listener into awareness at around fifty seconds with a high pitched note to make its presence felt. It has a beautiful juxtaposition of elongated, high notes that jostle with an undercurrent of crackling and fizzing. At one point, the two are engaged in a battle that feels like cold air and warm air before a thunderstorm might do. It’s sometimes an uncomfortable listen.
There is a gentle lull at around six minutes thirty in which it becomes, quieter, less piercing, more fluid in it’s movement. Then it charges up again for a final flourish that ends on a droning note that lasts for around forty seconds, before quietly fading.

Ernesto Diaz-Infante - Emilio / Civilian Life

About two years ago, this blog dealt for the first time with Ernesto Diaz-Infante, by reviewing "Our Faceless Empire", collaborative release, later included among the best of 2010.
After that, Ernesto (read this previous post) released two works, "Emilio" and "Civilian Life", respectively published in late 2011 and early 2012, the first on Kendra Steiner Editions, the second on his own label, Pax Recordings.

"Emilio" (the title comes from the name of Ernesto's uncle) consists of 32 untitled free-form sketches, each with a small duration, ranging from a few seconds to two minutes, for a total length of around half an hour.
A set of freehand drawings, each endowed with distinctive features: Diaz-Infante succeeds in giving uniqueness to the tracks, avoiding the risk of redundancy, likely consequence of playing only one instrument, in this case the bajo sexto. That's a valuable addition, that's so for "Emilio".
The mosaic structure of the work does not preclude the possibility to notice a linear sequence of performance. On the contrary, the miniatures can be easily inserted into a logical framework of composition.

What comes out are sounds in multifarious forms: sometimes the strings are gently touched by fingers or slightly scratched with objects, at times they seem to speak in a pleasant tone. Sometimes the contact is even more detectable: the instrument is used in a percussive way.
The results vary from peaceful, hypnotic passages to droning textures, whereas, in other circumstances, the sounds become harsh, hollow, even noisy.

An interesting exercise of improvisation, highly spontaneous, that also highlights Ernesto's skill and mastery of the medium.

Just a few months after "Emilio", Diaz-Infante released "Civilian Life".
Tangible differences with the previous disc here, from both conceptual and methodological perspectives.
Ernesto describes this work as a collection of mantra guitar recordings, embracing a period of nine years (from 2003 to 2011).
Thirteen pieces created by using a large number of instruments: acoustic and amplified bajo sexto, various types of acoustic guitars, singing bowl, electronic tanpura. Environmental recordings are marginally present (in the first track and in "A Gentle Reminder").

The album's common thread appears to be the concept of repetition applied to the sound, and here you can find some good examples of that: a measured pace in "Sun Hypnotic!", pure fluidity in "Easy To Disappear Into This Fog", a waving movement in "The Morning Sun Pours Through The Window", an echoing resonance in " Memories, Like Clouds . . .", the sonic balance of "JT".

In some segments the main theme is interpreted and put into practice literally ("Palais Idéal", "Shellacking The Sidewalk") or expressed in a more articulate manner, rather digressive: that's the case of "Yerba Buena", long piece, full of energy and motion.
A rhythmic acceleration as leading factor in "La Casa Encendida", that offers a lilting tune taking up the entirety of the track, bringing to mind an ancient ballad.
"The Pedestrian Tunnel At The Conservatory Of Flowers" is rich in simplicity: an acoustic guitar treads the path, very little notes, recurring, a melancholic ambiance that comes to life.
"Small Halo", only 27 seconds, closes this excellent album, further proof, if any were necessary, of great artistic inspiration conveyed in music.

Obs (short form of "Observatoire") is a Russian label (Rostov-based) born from the ashes of "Observatory Records" and maintaining substantial continuity with this one.
In fact, Observatory was discontinued in 2007, thirteen releases to its credit, and the number 14 marked the start of a new chapter entitled "Observatoire".

A third, further phase took shape in late 2011, under the current name, "Obs".

The label, active since 2005 and steadily run by Denis Shapovalov, artist (Adriva, Enmerkar, Matter and Sunchariot are projects he was involved in) as well as graphic designer (see below some artworks created by him), after a year of silence (2010), has made a significant comeback and consequently expanded considerably its catalogue.

Twelve valuable records released thus far since the last restart, the participation of names often mentioned in these pages (Ben Owen, Richard Garet) and other outstanding figures of the experimental scene (Andrea Marutti, Chris Whitehead, Five Elements Music, Francisco Meirino, Gregory Büttner, Jim Haynes, Roel Meelkop etc.): here are some factors that have led to a growing recognition for Denis' efforts.

Although these artists operate in different contexts and their conceptual approaches are anything but standardized, the label’s actual activity seems to show, as a recurring element, a predilection for works conceived through methods/means of experimentation privileging an intense use of concrete materials as sources, mostly submitted to post-processing techniques or somehow manipulated.
In addition, a firm choice to highlight new forms of electroacoustic improvisation.

The first section (Observatory Records) includes numbers from 001 to 013, whereas the titles from 014 to 025 are related to the second period (Observatoire) and finally the recent releases (starting with the number 026) are placed into Obs.
