Sawako - Brand New Fossil

Sawako's eclecticism is a given by now. Esteemed visual artist, she periodically revives her passion for pop music, and, very frequently, shows a keen interest in experiments linked to environmental recordings. This last aspect is what "Brand New Fossil" mainly discloses: a quick demonstration of Sawako's capabilities, of course, compressed in about nine minutes of total length. A 7 inches gracefully packaged and printed in two colors (tonalities of blue, also chosen for the vinyl, delicately stand out against a white background).
Two tracks per side to concretise the main theme of the work: fossils, both product of signals coming out from a handmade crystal radio and resulting from sound capturing activities. Fossils having a specific origin, and, despite the shortness of this disc, provided with as much realistic as evocative strength.
"Radio Stone", the opening piece (a blurred snapshot, a glimpsed scene, undefined) advances with a waving pace. Diffused patterns intersect at distinct points and shape a melodic entity.
The subsequent "Dot" is quite a fragment, ephemeral, condensed on some looped passages that, though alternated with phases of prolonged inertia, transmit a subtle sensation of syncopated rhythm.
The climate sensibly changes on the flip side: both pieces are generated by recordings made around Astroland, amusement park in Coney Island, NY. Different location, altered feedbacks here: “Season Off” consists of a sequence of urban movements, metal grindings from a door lock, traffic echoes and other reported moments of everyday life: all is just sketched, with an intense sense of deepness and participation emerging from the context.
“Astro Land”, the second part of the tale, primarily contains a set of voices interwoven with deaf sounds. The whole is expressed in a muffled way, but perceptible is a relevant amount of timbric variations (the method adopted to assemble them is really effective) which speak a mantric language.
Small but exemplary practice in the use of field recordings, significant proof of how to deal with them: not a mere presentation of what was picked up by microphones, rather focusing on revision and treatment of the collected material, filtered through a personal perspective.
Sawako as a phonographer does well in this, plainly and naturally.

Gilles Aubry - s6t8r

This is the second post concerning Gilles Aubry. It can be considered as a continuation of what we said about “Berlin Backyards” that left a highly positive impression two years ago.
Aubry returned in 2009 with three tracks giving form to “s6t8r”, CD that finds a proper place in Winds Measure catalogue, and, perhaps, is one of the titles more qualified to represent the spirit animating this label.
As should be evident by now, Spiritual Archives loves particularly such a genre of releases where environmental recordings are put to use in a larger compositional structure, which makes explicit a deeper sense of their presence and emphasizes other implications hidden behind phonographer’s choices clearly visible. In this case, the study of social contexts and urban areas related to a sonic research.

“s6t8r” gives evidence to this: over forty minutes, nearly the same length assigned to the three parts and, though the scenario is basically the same too, each of them has a specific identity and shows its own peculiarities.

The recording location was Stralau 68, experimental music centre situated in Berlin, whose activities ended in 2007. Most of the aural effects you can hear were obtained from a combination of what a nearby railway produced in sound and the acoustic response of the building, by reporting different results got in its rooms.

The first part opens with an assemblage of manifold recordings (train passing, rail noises, airflows, as gathered and managed) which brings a feeling of movement, steady, repetitive, and induces spontaneous involvement.
The scheme ends around the fifth minute: the sound becomes more uniform, almost a reductio ad unum of all previous instances, an overlap of sources (indoor responses are more distinguishable now), a prevalence of concrete and mechanical objects in support (for example, the rail impact gives back a striking outcome).
The second track offers a rumbling start, extended for two minutes, then a diffused noise emerges, as introduction to new layers which make the compound more pliable. Passages rich in dull tones alternated to segments built on an interaction of acoustic components, some of which, at times, even instil a sense of musicality to the piece.
The third episode is primarily structured on various sounds coming from trains, whose contribution gradually expands and increases, until a prolonged hiss bursts on the scene.

Aubry cleverly succeeds in amalgamating patterns of very different nature, creating an entity provided with harmonic motion, extracting attractive soundscapes from common materials.
Not self-indulgent at all, quite natural, widely emotional experiment.

Winds Measure Recordings is an American (Brooklyn, NY), relatively young label (four years of activity) whose aim is to spotlight innovative methods in sound exploration, facing uncommon levels of investigation through the recourse to elements of musique concrète, improvisational components and a wise handling of environmental recordings.
As confirmation of that, its catalogue exhibits some of the best names in the field (Asher, Gilles Aubry, Greg Davis, Richard Garet, Andy Graydon, Lawrence English, Jeph Jerman, Jason Khan, Ubeboet, and, of course, Ben Owen, the mind behind this project).

Another prerogative of wmr is a particular care for the layout and package design of the titles, conceived according to a minimalistic perspective, following an exclusive, unique graphic style.
Furthermore, and not a (minor) detail, their contents offer aural contexts often involving visual significances as natural projection, a substrate almost functional to them, despite different sources exploited by the artists: raw recordings or practices of digital processing or, more, products of analog treatments.

Music that would spread into wide open spaces as well as eligible for a close listening in a small room; sounds which give motion to stills of daily life and, equally, very useful as interpretative key of urban experiences.
