Saralunden & Andrey Kiritchenko - There Was No End

from Vital Weekly #593:

Might of course be just me not knowing much, but the name Sara Lunden is new to me. She plays synthesizer, vocals, guitar and recorder and composes songs.
How she recorded this album with Andrey Kiritchenko (objects, drums, field recordings, programming, electronics and editing) I don't know. Did they sat together and made or did Kiritchenko add his part later? In any case, that is not of real importance, the music counts. A lot.
Lunden's voice is alike Portishead and other trip hop like artists, but the music is not like that all. Melodic and melodramatic glitch pop music.
There are elements to be recognized from the abstract clicks 'n cuts music, but the overall emphasizes lies on popmusic.
Maybe the voice is a bit too much like the triphoppers of this world, but throughout I must admit I thought this was a highly enjoyable release.
Careful, vulnerable popmusic with a great modern touch.

BJ Nilsen - The Short Night

Benny Nilsen continues his territories exploration, using this time old tapemachines, generators, frequency analyzers and software.
Location recordings were Mälaren (Stockholm, Sweden) Coombe Gibbet (Berkshire, England) and Landakot (Vatnsleysuströnd, Iceland).
Seven tracks where sound crystallizes, showing us his diaphanous face, leading us into desolate landscapes.
A good soundtrack for next winter.

A Taste Of Ra - Morning Of My Life

Nicolai Dunger's A Taste of Ra complete his personal discographic trilogy with “Morning Of My Life”.
After two inspired works, simply titled with his moniker, now one single long track conceived into six movements with the "artistic" contribution of Jari Haapalainen, plus Johan and Andreas Berthling (Tape).
The result is a multiform work, where moments of ambient/drone, free-jazz, experimentation, psychedelia and folk come one after the other, into a transition emphasizing Nicolai’s passion for the music and a polychrome vision of the “morning of his life”.

Asmus Tietchens & Richard Chartier - Fabrication

In 1999 Microwave/Staalplaat published Richard Chartier’s “Post-Fabricated”, as a result of analog recordings started one year after.
In 2005 this work was re-constructed as “Re'Post'Postfabricated”, with new sounds created by artists like Alva Noto, Byetone, CoH, Frank Bretschneider, Freiband, Goem, Matmos, Sogar, Steve Roden, Taylor Deupree, Vend and, of course, Asmus Tietchens.
They received sound source files by Chartier, in order to manipulate them and create new works.
Now Die Stadt publishes these two CDs: the first is a collaboration between Chartier and Tietchens, based on original source material; the second is a Tietchens solo creation, from Post-Fabricated sounds.

Dan Kaufman - Force Of Light

from Tzadik website:

Dan Kaufman, the mastermind of the popular and eclectic band Barbez tackles Radical Jewish Culture with a brilliant interpretation of the life and work of enigmatic Jewish poet Paul Celan.
Born in Romania, Celan chose to write exclusively in German after losing his entire family to the Holocaust.
Combining words to create new compounds packed with imagery and meaning in an attempt to almost remake the German language, his poetry is now recognized as some of the greatest writing of the 20th century.
Kaufman responds to Celan with a sharp mind and a keen ear for harmony, lyricism and unusual sounds.

Lasse Marhaug - The Great Silence

from Vital Weekly # 572:

The silence of Marcel Duchamp is over-rated, as Beuys once said, and John Cage found out there is no silence. So if there is no silence, why not go complete opposite?
That's what Lasse Marhaug may have had in mind when he recorded 'The Great Silence' one september day in 2003.
Armed with guitar, amps, pedals, microphones, noise electronix, etc (that presumably is not the laptop that he was armed with for some time after that, before going guitar again), he does 'a Merzbow' here.
Record a full album in one day of ear-splitting noise. Three long tracks that work like monochrome paintings - in black that is.
Mean, dirty and loud and Marhaug is like the son of Masami. Crafting a fine album, which leaves no room for any surprises, which are these days hard to find in the world of noise, but 'The Great Silence' is a sturdy, hefty mark on the scene.

Norbert Möslang - Header_Change

from Vital Weekly # 594:

Usually releases on Cut deal with improvised music of some acoustic kind in combination with electronics and/or computers. These two new releases however deal solely with computers, and it works in a good way and in a bad way.
To start with the latter. I have been a big fan of Voice Crack, of Möslang/Guhl and of the various solo releases by Möslang, but his 'Header_change' I don't like one bit.
It's titled after the 'practice of changing the values in the header code of a data file' and Möslang does something like that to stills of video artist Silvie Defraoui.
The audio files were pressed to vinyl and mixed live. To me it sounds like easy time stretched material which is put into a multi-track program and spiced with some delay and reverb. Unfortunately it sounds too much like the first experiments of someone who just downloaded some music software. I pass on this one.

Joe Gilmore - On Quasi-Convergence And Quiet Spaces

from Vital Weekly # 594:

Joe Gilmore, once a member of Powerbooks For Peace and founder of rand()% (automated internet radio), shows how these things should be done. The material is taken from solo computer improvisations from 2002-2004 (mostly as a by-product of group improvisation), but edited in 2007.
Of course it's hard to say what amount here is the raw improvisation and what portion is editing, but Gilmore does a fine job.
Things buzz, beep, crack and cut in the truest fashion of microsound and beyond - meaning: louder (sometimes even Mego like) - in quite hypnotic pieces of computer music. Loud and vicious at times, but also ambient and minimal in 'U+221E', the closing piece of the CD.
For those who love the lesser harsh noise on labels as Mego and Alku, this Joe Gilmore is something worth looking for, be it not entirely new, but a great work anyway.

Sillage - Sillage

from Vital Weekly # 593

Both Seth Nehil and Brendan Murray have a vast catalogue behind their names of both solo works and collaborative ones.
Together they have worked since 2003, when they played a set together at the Intransitive festival and then later some more in New York. Much of what they did together is at the basis of this disc.
They have a strong interest in both field recordings and computer processings thereof. It's hard to tell from these eight pieces what is what, but it seems obvious that things work alongside eachother.
Especially Murray's work in this field is great (and much underrated). Controlled atmospheric electric charges, contact microphones scratching the surface and plug ins constantly rework what is on hand, and the result is a densely knitted field of work.
Perhaps obvious work in the field of microsound, phonography and such like, but this is a great recording, as far as I'm concerned.

The Necks - Townsville

from ReR website:

The Necks in quiet mood recorded at a concert recording in Townsville, Thuringowa, Northern Queensland.
Though many Necks' pieces open with - or eventually arrive at - some discernable groove, Townsville just floats in a state of suspension from beginning to end. It's like watching the ocean as wave follows wave follows wave: each the same; each different; assymetric.
Bassist Lloyd Swanton who, on this occasion, provides the motif that set Townsville running says he had had no idea where it would lead: 'One of the deep joys for me' he said, 'after twenty years of making music with this group, is that we're still completely unable to predict where our pieces will go’.
